Google to Index Published Docs

Google has announced today that it intends to start indexing and making available via its search engine publicly published Google App documents .

It actually never occurred to me that they didn’t already, but now they announced it all you Google App admin people should make sure that you are happy for your Users to publish outside your domain. From the announcement I can only assume that any previously published documents will continue to be published and if this needs to be changed it will need to be done on a per user per document basis.

Looking at the options you are pretty much covered in you options going forward, in that you can prevent it, allow it but with a warning and allow it without the warning. It would be nice to allow it on a user or group basis so that collaboration outside the domain can occur for specific users and or groups of users.

GMail Outage

Its common knowledge that Google had an outage which affected web access during Tuesday this week.

There are plenty of sites claiming doom and gloom over this sort of outage and this is why cloud services are not ready, but I ask you to consider what sort of service level you might get from your non gmail account.

Those working with Exchange (Microsoft’s Email system) know it can fail fairly regularly, however a simple service restart will normally fix the issue.

Or what about your ISP service, I am sure they have outages all the time. It is just that you are not checking constantly to know the service has gone off line.

I personally did not have any issues during Tuesday and I run 4 google mail accounts.

Whatever the reason, Google will have learnt their lesson as they know they cannot afford for it to happen again. In turn this will make their service stronger and more resilient.

I for one do not have an issue of loosing email for a couple of hours, as long all my emails are there when the service returns.

No More Gmail ‘Send As’

If you look in your settings of Gmail now under accounts you can set your own SMTP server rather than using Googles mail servers, why is this good.

For a long time if you have tried to send mail from google using some other email address other than your main google mail address the person receiving the email would see ‘Sent on Behalf Of’ . So if like me you wanted to use your gmail account for business it would make it unusable or for times when there was no option.

Now I can happily send email knowing my clients will see just my business email address.

I accept that this was never an issue if you use GAFYD but I have a number of different business domains and running a GAFYD for each was impractical.

This new functionality now just needs to be rolled out to the various GMail Mobile apps so I can ‘send as’ whilst I am out and about.

GMail and Labels

Gmail has just released an update to their online gmail client.

The change puts more emphasis on labels and now allows users to drag and drop emails onto (into labels) giving a much more ‘desktop’ feeling to the app.

As promised Zoho have lifted the lid of their new app that they had been promising.

The ‘new app’ is not strictly new but a revamped version of projects. It looks clean and well thought out with more emphasis on working as teams.
